The results may seem overripe and dated in spots, but she coaxes a fine performance out of Nolte, and the other actors herself included acquit themselves honorably.

This film is very '90s in feel, and that piece of conventional direction makes the other storytelling tropes all the more glaring, and it's hard enough to disregard the predictability of this romantic drama on paper, especially when the film gives you plenty of time to soak in the conventions.

Streisand's triumphantly good job of locating that story's salient elements and making them come alive on the screen. Pretty good romantic soap Barbra Streisand as Dr. Bonnie Johnson as 1st Nurse. Justen Woods as Tom Wingo age 6.

The restraints that a more seasoned director would've given Nolte would've helped him because this is a performance in which Nolte plays willy-nilly without a clear plan for his character or a clear character arc. Lindsay Wray as Jennifer Wingo. A sappy and overpraised movie that is all over the place trying to bite off a lot more than it can chew, even discarding its heavy-handed family drama which gets solved in the most pathetic way to focus on a corny romance - and it didn't deserve any of the Oscar nominations it got.
